Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer seeking full-time education reporter

The Owensboro Messenger-Inquirer, a 21,407 circulation (30,380 Sunday) daily newspaper located along the Ohio River in northwestern Kentucky on the Indiana border, is looking to hire a full-time education reporter.

Currently Kentucky’s fourth-largest daily (behind Louisville’s The Courier-Journal, the Lexington Herald-Leader and the Kentucky Enquirer in Covington) — and arguably one of its two best — the Messenger-Inquirer is owned by Paducah-based Paxton Media Group. Belo bought the paper on Jan. 5, 1996 from Owensboro’s Hager family, who’d owned it since 1929, then sold it to Paxton on Nov. 22, 2000.

They’re looking for someone with a year or two of reporting experience or a recent college graduate with internship experience. It’s a pretty rare opportunity — not just because it’s a newspaper hiring someone instead of firing them, but because the Messenger-Inquirer staff has very little turnover.

To apply, email a cover letter, résumé and clips to Editor Matt Francis (mfrancis@messenger-inquirer.com) or City Editor Robert Bruck (bbruck@messenger-inquirer.com), or mail them to the Messenger-Inquirer at 1401 Frederica St., Owensboro, KY 42301.

How many newspapers do you know of that would ever promote a photographer to city editor? This one did. They also left another important fact out of the job description: the Messenger-Inquirer’s only two miles from Moonlite Bar-B-Q Inn.

Apply now — this one won’t last long.
