Citing low ridership, discount U.S. bus carrier Megabus has quietly discontinued service to and from Lexington, Ky.

“After running this route over a period of time we have determined that due to low ridership it was no longer feasible to continue,” a Megabus customer service rep identifying himself as Kevin said in a May 4, 2016 email.

“As a company we need to be able to cover all our costs and make a profit to enable us to be able to fund future vehicle purchases and replace vehicles when they reach the end of their life,” the Megabus representative said. “Unfortunately the overall demand just isn’t sufficient to sustain [service to and from Lexington].”

Billing itself as the first low-cost express bus service to offer intercity travel between U.S. city centers, Megabus is a subsidiary of New Jersey-based Coach U.S.A.  The company began U.S. operations in April 2006.

In June 2013, Megabus began offering daily service to and from Lexington, with passengers being able to travel directly to and from Atlanta, Cincinnati, Chattanooga, and Knoxville, Tenn., with connections available to and from Columbus, Ohio; Erie, Pa. and Buffalo, N.Y.

Buses departed twice daily from the Lexington Transit Center, the hub of local transit authority Lextran.
